[3D Printing Application] Preoperative planning for tumor resection: Speeds up surgery by 1 hour!

The biomedical engineering team "Mirai3D" has long been dedicated to combining 3D printing with virtual simulation technology to develop various non-invasive surgical procedures. In collaboration with Argentine medical doctor Gustavo Nari, the Mirai3D team uses IDEX technology (independent dual-nozzle system) for 3D printing to develop and fabricate biomedical models, enabling comprehensive pre-operative planning and improving the success rate of each surgery. Surgical procedures in oncology are extremely complex. During the process, doctors must observe around vital organs to pinpoint the location of the tumor before removal. BCN3D uses IDEX (Independent Dual Extruders) 3D printing technology, where the two extruder systems are completely separate and move independently, with the nozzle paths not interfering with each other during operation. Medical teams can simultaneously use two different materials to create bone and tissue models of different parts of the human body, or use two different colors of 3D printing filaments to provide doctors with visual aids for different areas.

The shorter the surgery time, the faster the patient recovers.

There was a 65-year-old female patient who needed a liver transplant, but she had a history of surgery for ovarian and colorectal tumors and congenital thrombocytopenia. If she were to undergo surgery again, any possibility of massive bleeding must be avoided.

The Mirai3D team used two-color 3D printing to create simulated models of the liver, liver blood vessels, and tumor locations. Before surgery, the medical team studied various potential problems between the tumor and the liver, and obtained the most accurate reference after understanding the vascular structure.

Thanks to the assistance of 3D printed models, the surgery time has been significantly reduced by nearly an hour! The shorter the surgery time, the faster the patient recovers, and the less time spent under the scalpel, which can also effectively reduce the risk of sudden illness and infection.

Did you enjoy this sharing session? The more professional the medical team's technology, the safer and less invasive the postoperative results can be for patients. Combining 3D printing technology not only saves costs and time but also shortens the patient's recovery time and increases the confidence of the medical team. 3Dprint offers more than just 3D printing .
