[3D Printing] Revolutionizing Architecture! The First Starbucks Store in the US to be 3D Printed
Starrbucks has a new product! This time, the new product is a 3D-printed store?
This drive-thru Starbucks store on Boca Chica Boulevard in Brownsville, Texas, officially opened in June 2025. Its innovative and eye-catching 3D-printed store makes Starbucks one of the few major retailers in the United States to attempt to apply 3D printing technology to commercial buildings.
This Starbucks store, covering approximately 1,400 square feet, was built in just six days through a collaboration with Peri 3D architecture, significantly reducing labor input, time costs, and construction expenses. Its core engineering was led by robotic arms, employing a layer-by-layer concrete stacking technique, featuring rectangular laminated concrete walls, and seamlessly integrating door and window structures into the overall building, ultimately presenting a highly futuristic visual experience.

At first glance, this compact rectangular building bearing the Starbucks logo doesn't appear significantly different from other stores. However, closer inspection reveals its sharply angled walls, resembling stacked tubular structures. Architectural experts point out that this store is an example of how the construction industry is exploring the application of 3D printing technology.
"It's too early to say," said James Ross, director of the Smart Structures Institute at the University of Tennessee. "I'm happy to see people trying out diverse applications, and I believe the best use will be found in the future. But for now, I think a lot of experiments are underway, which is definitely a good thing."
Andrew McCoy, associate director of research and innovation at Virginia Tech’s Myers-Lawson School of Architecture, called the new store “a leader in its field.”

McCoy stated that, overall, the cost of building using 3D technology is still higher than that of traditional wooden buildings. However, he noted that 3D technology can help address labor shortages and accelerate construction. He anticipates that 3D technology will eventually become more cost-competitive over time.
"You're starting to see the technology get faster and smaller," McCoy said. "It's becoming easier to use."

In fact, this is not the first time Starbucks has used 3D printing technology in its stores.
Back in 2017, Starbucks used a 3D-printed Teavana bar counter in a Reserve Roastery store in Shanghai, China. The base of the counter was created using 3D printing technology. Starbucks claims it was built with recycled materials, similar to CONCR3DE. These 3D-printed layers form a sturdy base approximately 7.5 meters long.

Starbucks' first 3D-printed coffee shop in Brownsville, Texas, is not only an innovative attempt at commercial space design but also a significant milestone in the digital revolution of the construction industry. Looking to the future, this building, constructed by robotic arms stacking concrete layer by layer , heralds an era of more efficient, flexible, and sustainable construction that is rapidly approaching.
